Every year, ‘de Schorre’, a recreational area in Boom, Belgium, is transformed into a life size fairytale world. This is the setting for one of the most anticipated electronic dance music festivals in the world.

COUNTRY: BELGIUM
PRINTING TYPE: DIGITAL
TECHNIQUE: THE LIGHTEST BUT BIGGEST VOLUME, THE HOT AIR BALLOON WAS MADE OUT OF FIRE RETARDANT 215G/M² POLYESTER FABRIC FROM A.BERGER TEXTIL. THE 3D-SHAPE WAS DECONSTRUCTED INTO CUTTING PATTERNS IN CINEMA 4D. THESE WERE PRINTED DIRECTLY ON THE FABRIC WITH A DURST RHOTEX PRINTER BEFORE BEING CUT ON A ZÜND D3 PLOTTER. THE NON VISIBLE PARTS AT THE INSIDE OF THE  CONSTRUCTION WERE CUT OUT OF 680G/M² POLYMAR 8205 DOUBLE-COATED TARPAULIN FROM MEHLER, BECAUSE THEY WERE IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE SUPPORTING METAL CONSTRUCTION INSIDE THE INFLATABLE. IT TOOK 48 HOURS IN TOTAL FOR SEWING THE PARTS TOGETHER TO CONSTRUCT THE RESULT: 2 HALF SPHERES TO FIT ON THE CUSTOM MADE METAL CONSTRUCTION, FORMING THE COMPLETE BALLOON SHAPE. THE AIRSHIP WAS CONSTANTLY TURNING AROUND SLOWLY AND THE BALLOON WAS INTERNALLY ILLUMINATED AT NIGHT SO THAT THE 400.000  VISITORS COULD USE IT AS A LANDMARK DAY AND NIGHT.

EuroShop is the world’s largest trade fair for retail investment requirements. Our customer was present at this Euroshop fair in 2017 in Düsseldorf. They are manufacturer of a unique, modular, fast building and lightweight frame system for stand building. Usually the frames they use to build their booths are covered with printed textile, so the structure is hardly visible - to become a clean design look. But for this Euroshop fair, the customer asked us to print on a textile which was transparent enough to give a maximum display to the frames. So we decided to print on “Decovoile”, a very thin 52 grams textile, which is very see-through. This way, their product was perfect in picture.

This creative artwork design is the result of my first module (External Competition) dealt in my last year at University of East London (UEL), in Printed Textile Design level 3. The fabric design is named **Active City of London (Building in Cross series)**. It reproduces a variety of monument edifices in city of London rearranged in cross shape; cross inspired from England flag. The buildings cross shape is ranged in juxtaposition as pattern beside another buildings cross shape with a different color tone.
