TECHNIQUE
Once the designs were  approved, it was down to us to create the finished display. We started by print testing Photoshop files in order to pinpoint the best colourways from the proposed selection. To achieve this, we tested several  different substrates, acrylic, anodised aluminium and steel plate. Aluminium was the chosen substrate and Ai files were supplied for the laser cut butterflies. We printed on both sides and finished each piece with a double lacquer coating, capturing the desired shimmering iridescent effect when illuminated from above. Using aluminium also allowed the weight to be kept to a minimum. It was agreed we’d produce a 50% scaled model of the display with each of the 100 butterflies hanging in situ.
Each butterfly was cut from 1.2mm aluminium and drilled with a different fixing point to create multiple different angles of flight. During this process, each butterfly was identified, positioned and marked from a suspended aluminium disc. Each had an exact cut length of stainless steel wire, secured with a gripple fixing. This resulted
in two very long days in our workshop, but we knew it would save time on installation and remove of any unexpected risks. production began with the manufacture of the supporting 1990mm diameter 3mm aluminium circular structure. This was fitted with a 110mm return, welded to take 4 -2mt lengths of looped steel rope fixings. These were attached to a remote controlled 50kg hoist for maintenance, concealing
all the 8 inset lights, wires and gripple fixings. The structure was finished in a powder coat to RAL 9003 finish. The printed ‘Gift of Life’ logo was colour matched and printed on  permanent self-adhesive Avery vinyl with an over laminate
kiss cut, applied to the underside reading down. The completed finished structure cascades down by 2500mm. Each of the cut  100 butterflies required positioning and printing for both sides at 100% size on our Agfa Jeti Mira MG2716  flatbed printer, followed by the double lacquer coating. To explain ‘The Gift of Life’ story, we were required to create an accompanying wall plaque on  3mm powder coated aluminium, 900mm in diameter. We printed this to match  directly and fitted using barrel mounts, also powder coated white to match.
